Reading has always been identified as the secret of every successful person. It goes without saying that nothing scholarly or academic can be achieved without in-depth research and reading.
The Imo state Library was formerly located in the heart of Owerri until it was moved to its permanent site by the present administration. Its location along the popular bank road had only one advantage which was its proximity to majority of those who made use of it. Besides that, the noise from passing vehicles made it difficult to properly concentrate while reading unless you are making use of the rooms downstairs which are shielded from the noise because of its location.
It was therefore a welcome development when I discovered the old structure was demolished and a deserving structure built behind the state House of Assembly complex along Port Harcourt road, New Owerri.
Even the tricycle rider who took me to the new site when I visited it for the first time last year agreed it was a better location as a result of the serenity of the location.
“This place make sense pass the other place na because the noise go reduce well well” he said.
The new location raises the issue of accessibility as indicated by some people who spoke to me. “My brother, I don’t frequent the library again, because of the off town location” one Mr Samson told me.
Despite this, it is far better than the former place and I believe a good number of people will be excited about it especially as the Governor recently commissioned the initial phase of an electronic library and resource management system in the new complex.
The new library complex
According to The Trent, the Governor while commissioning the 100 capacity electronic library said it will help promote qualitative education and research development in the state. He also enjoined the staff of the library to be of service to people who make use the facility and promised to replicate the e-library in all institutions of higher learning in the state.
I hope the people of the state will make maximum use of this all important complex to advance knowledge and education in the state.
