‘Keke NAPEP’ drivers to receive new cars for their business.

Scores of tricycle owners popularly known as Keke NAPEP showed up at the Heroes Square, Owerri, to receive their new vehicles as promised by the governor of Imo State Owelle Anayo Rochas Okorocha.

Governor Okorocha had some months ago, as part of his Imo Rescue Project, said he would stop tricyclists from plying the major roads in Owerri. To that end, he promised to give out 2000 Volkswagen Passat Station Wagon vehicles to Keke drivers through a ballot system.

As at the time of this write-up, the governor was still expected to be at the venue for the handover. Some transporters interviewed thanked the governor for his magnanimous gesture while others said they should be given more time before the ban takes effect as it would further impoverish them if implemented immediately. Some others through this medium, pleaded with the governor to allow the Keke Napep operators to do their business alongside the taxis as they would not make enough gain if they were asked to ply the rural areas.

Our reporter gathered that the cars would be leased to the awardees, or in popular parlance, given out on ‘hire purchase’ at the sum of N1,000,000 of which the recipient would pay a weekly sum of N10,000.

Some people expressed fears that since the vehicles were not brand new, they would not be durable.
